David Margolis Memorial Scholarship

How To Apply

The mission of The Loomis Chaffee School is to advance the development of students in mind, body, and spirit through rigorous academic programs, an inclusive community, and an emphasis on engaged citizenship. The school, as its Founders intended, seeks to inspire in its students a commitment to the best self and the common good. Loomis Chaffee, located in Windsor, Connecticut, is a coeducational secondary school with a student body of 720. Seventy-two percent of the students are boarders from over 30 states and 40 countries, while twenty-eight percent are day students from Hartford, Springfield, and their suburbs. Thirty-one percent are students of color from the United States, while approximately fifteen percent are international students. Thirty-three percent of the students receive over $10.5 million in need-based financial aid from the school’s Office of Admission & Financial Aid, many through the awarding of over 170 named endowed scholarships. The David Margolis ’57 Memorial Scholarship is one of these. As the language suggests, Loomis Chaffee only provides financial aid to the families of students who qualify because of need; they cannot afford Loomis Chaffee’s tuition without financial assistance.

Candidates who complete the application process for Loomis Chaffee and require financial aid may not apply directly for the David Margolis ’57 Memorial Scholarship. Although they may certainly note that David Margolis’s name, illustrious history, and this website attracted their attention and piqued their interest in the school, the school’s Scholarship Committee awards all named endowed scholarships to recipients who best meet the criteria of each scholarship. Thus, all accepted and enrolled students who receive financial aid become eligible for selection by the Scholarship Committee, which meets in the spring of each year.

The Scholarship Committee will award the David Margolis ’57 Memorial Scholarship to an incoming ninth-grader with strong academic credentials who exhibits intellectual curiosity, social and extracurricular engagement, and leadership potential.

The entire application process may be found on Loomis Chaffee’s website – www.loomis.org – by clicking on the “Apply Now!” link on the homepage. As a result of that click, interested students and their parents will find the following:

Step 1: Submit Inquiry
The information that you provide on the inquiry form will enable the Admission Office to send you specific information about programs of interest to you. If, by chance, you have already received electronic communication from Loomis Chaffee's Admission Office during this academic year, you do not need to complete another online inquiry.

Step 2: Schedule an Interview
Every candidate must have a personal interview; the Admission Office offers them during a variety of times and days to accommodate different time zones. The interview will last approximately 45 minutes and includes the opportunity for parents/guardians to ask questions after the student’s portion is completed.

Once you submit your inquiry form, in this special year the Admission Office will email you a link to our online interview scheduler. Please watch carefully for this email in your inbox and save it for future reference if you are not yet ready to schedule your online interview. If you prefer, you may call us at (860) 687-6400 to schedule your interview.

Step 3: Apply Online
Access to the 2021–22 application is available. To complete the online application, you must pay your application fee via credit card at the time of submission. The only exception is if the Admission Office has granted you and your parents/guardian a fee waiver. Please contact the Admission Office for further instructions if you are requesting a fee waiver. The application fee is $75.00 for students who are living in the U.S., Canada, or Mexico, or $160.00 for students living in another foreign country. All fees must be drawn from a U.S. bank.

To apply to Loomis Chaffee, you may select one or the other of the applications below.

GATEWAY           SAO

Step 4: Standardized Testing Policy
Loomis Chaffee does not require standardized testing except for those students whose first language is not English and have had fewer than two years in an English-instruction school. English proficiency can be demonstrated through either the TOEFL or IELTS examination.

If you are not submitting test results, we strongly encourage the submission of a third academic recommendation (See “Recommendation Forms” below.).

If you wish to submit testing in support of your application, we prefer the SSAT or ISEE for applicants entering grades 9 and 10. The Loomis Chaffee SSAT code is 4672. We prefer the PSAT, SAT, or ACT for those students applying for grades 11 through postgraduate. Please note that all testing must be sent by the official testing agency and received by February 1, 2021. Further information, including frequently asked questions, is available below.

Step 5: Transcript(s)
Loomis Chaffee requires that your current and previous schools, if applicable, directly submit official transcripts to the Admission Office. Transcripts must include the current school year’s courses and most recent grades, as well as grades from the prior academic year; e.g. applicants to grade 10 should submit transcripts from both grade 9 (current) and 8 (prior). Candidates for admission to grade 11 through postgraduate must include all years of high school coursework and grades on their transcripts.

Step 6: Recommendation Forms
Loomis Chaffee requires three recommendations: the current English teacher, the current mathematics teacher, and the School Report. We strongly recommend applicants who are not submitting testing provide an additional academic recommendation for review.

In addition, we require the submission of the Parent/Guardian Statement for all candidates.

These forms may be submitted online through either the SAO or the Gateway application. Each of these documents is also available for download in PDF form below. Applicants applying for the 2021–22 school year should use the forms below.
